{"id":1767,"date":"2010-02-12T14:32:08","date_gmt":"2010-02-12T18:32:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lwlworldwide.com\/blog\/?p=1767"},"modified":"2010-11-01T20:22:03","modified_gmt":"2010-11-02T00:22:03","slug":"the-pursuit-of-happiness-can-cause-unhappiness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lwlworldwide.com\/blog\/the-pursuit-of-happiness-can-cause-unhappiness\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8220;Pursuit of Happiness&#8221; Can Cause Unhappiness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You know, besides watching<em> The Amazing Race<\/em> or <em>Entourage<\/em> every Sunday night (with a big bowl of popcorn) with my partner-in-crime (the also amazing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heathervale.com\" target=\"_blank\">Heather<\/a>), there&#8217;s nothing more exciting than helping folks wrap some <strong>grounded &#8220;common sense&#8221;<\/strong> around some pretty <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">esoteric<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">deeply cerebral<\/span> topics.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin: 1px 14px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"daydream\" src=\"http:\/\/www.istockphoto.com\/file_thumbview_approve\/5289802\/2\/istockphoto_5289802-money-daydream.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"228\" \/>Just <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>talking<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em> about (or pontificating on) any aspect of &#8220;manifestation&#8221; applies to the part of life where you&#8217;re spending more time &#8220;in your head&#8221; than experiencing something (NOTICE I put emphasis on talking for a reason. I&#8217;ll get to that in a second).<\/p>\n<p>Yes, we intellectually-wired and thought-infused humans (which is most of us,\u00a0 by the way) DO have to go through the process of <em>proving<\/em> to ourselves (even though our conscious Self doesn&#8217;t know it) that we can&#8217;t<em> just<\/em> read, wish, daydream, affirm, reprogram, meditate, or analyze our way into a life of happiness, success and prosperity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And the reason I bring this point up<\/strong> \u2014 that RESULTS (actually EXPERIENCING what we think, imagine, and say we\u2019re going to do or have) over talk matters \u2014 is because spiritual rhetoric and time-worn surface-level \u201cfeel good\u201d (or \u201cnon-challenging\u201d) precepts and mottos continue to proliferate the self-help arena at an alarming rate<span style=\"color: #cc3300;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #cc3300;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span>Yes, we&#8217;ll readily agree, it&#8217;s mainly due to marketers out there\u00a0\u2014 disguised as &#8220;evolved teachers&#8221; who give the impression of becoming that way due to some magical recipe that apparently nobody else has figured out \u2014 who package up their wares for the MASSES. <span style=\"color: #cc3300;\">Hint<\/span>: they know how to tell you what you want to hear in ways that&#8217;ll make your mouth water.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Believing that you are effecting change or growth in others or yourself \u2014 because you don\u2019t rock the boat, or because you ignore so-called \u201cnegative\u201d or emotionally challenging \u201cstuff\u201d, or because you pursue lofty states like &#8220;bliss&#8221; or &#8220;happiness&#8221; \u2014 when you\u2019re really just rolling along on the winds of emotional comfort and spiritual safety, is <strong>VERY DANGEROUS<\/strong>.<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em> <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Click the link below to learn why&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>&#8211; <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Cont&#8217;d<\/span> <\/strong><\/span>&#8211;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recently a client of ours, who has gone through more unfulfilled pursuits than a junk-food addict goes through bags of chips, just felt the need to hang it all up \u2014 to stop her interests in entrepreneurship. Even though she finally verbally admitted to us that she was spreading herself too thin across multiple businesses, she just figured she&#8217;d be better served to &#8220;explore happiness&#8221; (her words, not ours).<\/p>\n<p>The first thing that came to mind, when hearing that, was: &#8220;<em>Is that sorta like going after a good beer buzz?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>George Bernard Shaw once cautioned: &#8220;Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And, the rub around &#8220;happiness&#8221; \u2014 or more accurately said: the futile time spent in attempting to find somebody else&#8217;s SECRETS to HAPPINESS \u2014 is that it&#8217;s like trying to be in a constant state of orgasm. Hey, what a great state to be in, if you get it&#8230; and, if you&#8217;ve got nothing else to do or experience, huh?<\/p>\n<p>But, like an orgasm that never leaves,\u00a0 a\u00a0happiness-high that extends its stay at your party can sorta cramp your lifestyle. After all, you&#8217;ve got places to go, people to see, more people to get to know, hobbies to pursue, and business to attend to.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, &#8220;physical&#8221; life NOW!<\/p>\n<p>In the comments to our May 23rd 2009 post, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lwlworldwide.com\/blog\/fake-happiness-raw-growth-and-the-next-harry-potter\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fake Happiness, Raw Growth, &amp; The Next &#8216;Harry Potter<\/a>,&#8221; one of our subscribers put full-spectrum living in perspective.<\/p>\n<p><em>Azum writes:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It is true that the pursuit of happiness is something that can cause unhappiness<\/span><\/strong>. We live in a world which can generally be an awesome place too\u2026 but we are also subject to an infrastructure of forced social adaptation that is governed by advertising and collective trends. As human animals with an inherent need to belong and be part of a collective, it is easy to fall prey to socio-cultural definitions of happiness and success, and aimlessly pursue them to maintain appearances and status.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Barry&#8217;s interpretation?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lwlworldwide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/OneSearchGlass1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1784\" style=\"margin: 2px 14px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"OneSearchGlass\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lwlworldwide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/OneSearchGlass1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lwlworldwide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/OneSearchGlass1.gif 230w, https:\/\/lwlworldwide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/OneSearchGlass1-150x150.gif 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 184px) 100vw, 184px\" \/><\/a>Simply this:\u00a0 Like\u00a0it or not, the &#8220;physical&#8221; world we play in at the moment \u00a0rewards us for PRODUCING \u2014 for discovering needs (yours, not just others&#8217;), helping fulfill them, and then starting the process all over again.<\/p>\n<p>When we set out to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">search new territory<\/span> (new ideas, new systems of belief, new knowledge, new ways of doing things) we discover. When we discover something new, we&#8217;re always in the position to TRY (attempt) something new.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we have fun, and get results with it, and sometimes we don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>You see, to me, striving for a STATE of &#8220;happiness&#8221;, like the ever-elitist quest to pursue enlightenment, isn&#8217;t so much about &#8220;getting there&#8221; as it is actually being awake and content enough to enjoy the ride&#8230; a ride that will be smooth AND bumpy along the way.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, if you were to STRIVE to &#8220;get to&#8221; an unfrazzled, almost emotionless state (like some yoga teachers we know) whenever you needed to express a so-called &#8220;unevolved\u00a0emotion&#8221;\u00a0that would assist you (like &#8220;concern&#8221; or &#8220;worry&#8221; that DO come in handy every now and then), you&#8217;d almost be like the &#8220;hypocritical Christian&#8221; who society labels as such because they think or occasionally do bad things.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, but, as they say in the south: &#8220;He&#8217;s just backsliding a bit. He&#8217;ll pray more, he&#8217;ll talk to the Pastor and he&#8217;ll be firm again in his faith.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yaaaaaawwwwnnn!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get over yourself!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Guess what&#8230;. life,\u00a0in all its\u00a0beauty and ugliness, never told you you&#8217;d always experience <em>perfection<\/em>. So, it sure the hell ain&#8217;t asking you to <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">be<\/span><\/em> it either.<\/p>\n<p>We know of a teacher who has an ongoing EXCESSIVE battle with negativity. He literally views &#8220;negative thinking&#8221; as\u00a0an abomination of the human condition.\u00a0 Seriously, there was at one point a line on his sales page that read: &#8220;Negative thinking is THE primary source of all the diseases that afflict human beings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For whatever reason, this self-labeled &#8220;teacher&#8221; just wouldn&#8217;t accept that this his very Johnny Quest-like personal adventure is\u00a0proliferating the very thing he&#8217;s trying so, so hard \u2014 and putting so, so much energy on \u2014 to avoid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, if you&#8217;ve read this far, I have a question for you:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Have you ever considered that &#8220;happiness&#8221;, just like the needless quest for &#8220;enlightenment&#8221;,\u00a0 is simply an \u00a0&#8220;experience&#8221;, and NOT a permanent way of life?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To paraphrase Blair Warren, we don&#8217;t feel that somebody &#8220;gets&#8221; happy (or enlightened) like they get a tattoo, get a college degree or get married. Instead, it&#8217;s just an experience.
